Catholic missionary bishop in India and the Phillipines. Born in Germany, Hurth emigrated to the United States in 1874, became a novice in the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1875, and served as an instructor of Latin and Greek at the University of Notre Dame from 1877 to 1879. Ordained a priest in 1880, he became president of St. Joseph Commercial College in Cincinnati until 1884, when he was appointed vice-president and (the same year) president of St. Edward's College in Austin, Te...
